Thoughts on Tutoring!
As professionals in a tutoring program it is essential that we all are on the same track and show constancy in our tutoring. Following are some important points to remember:
Keys to being an effective tutor.
Establish the right environment. Be comfortable and safe. Greet tutees; ask what you can help them with.
Recognize necessary components of a good tutoring session. Give your tutee undivided attention, have empathy, be honest, and know your tutees weakness and strengths. Also having a sense of humor and giving praise can really add to the tutoring session.
Being prepared for the tutoring session shows concern and willingness to help.
Homework and take home test.
-
Tutees should come prepared to the tutoring session. Tutees should do all or at least attempt homework assignments. I do NOT pay tutors while students work on their homework assignments.
- Tutors are to assist students with difficult areas and once they understand, the tutor should continue on to the next question. Tutors should not be the one to do the assignment, but to assist in the completion of the assignment. You will not be there to take the test for the student!
-
The most productive tutoring sessions are 30 minutes to one hour in length.
-
Students again should come prepared with questions and concerns about assignments, readings and/or concepts from class. As a tutor you should encourage students to come with questions and concerns.
-
Tutors should answer tutee’s questions, work out difficult problems, clarify readings or lecture notes, and give important tips on improving study skills.
-
Always leave with either another appointment set or when you will make contact again.
-
Seek out training to be a more effective tutor.
-
Clearly establish expectations for your tutee.
-
Have a clear idea of your own strengths and limitations.
-
Know your tutee’s way of learning.
-
Build a trust- be honest and be aware that there are differences between tutor and the tutee.
-
Make sure the learner knows it is safe to not succeed at first.
-
There is no single formula for motivating every tutee, but there are some things that could work.
-
Praise the tutee when he/she does a good job.
-
Motivation involves taking risks. Try to reassure the tutees and build confidence.
-
Expect little but hope for everything. Remember not everyone has the same motivation as you.
A tutoring session is not for...
Discussing the weekend plans, getting a date, giving the answers, and socializing.
